		<description>Lick Life Against
the Direction
of Its Fur

Read: Are the ghosts with us now?

Reflections on
Lick Life Against the Direction of Its Fur
by Persis Bekkering

“How could one gain a bit of time forward when faced with an acute shortage of future? The simple answer: by going a bit backward in time.”

Haunted by a lost future, three performers summon dances and fashions of the 1980s: an era where former hippies put their hope into market liberalism, where bright colours, campy jazz dance moves, and eccentric individuals dominated. Where algorithms, doomscrolling, and neofascism were already ghostly present. The future might be lost, but with a tragicomical insistence, Lick Life Against the Direction of Its Fur states that “weird” is a powerful act of freedom and resistance.

The piece unfolds in two chapters, like two sides of the same coin. On one side: a desire to retreat into the familiar territory of the past. On the other: the gut, screaming that the only place to live is now, in intimate friction with the shit that it entails. In between: a “metabolic rift” – the irreparable rupture between humans and nature that is inherent to capitalism.Premiere at Kaserne Basel (CH)September 10-14, 2025Tour:far° festival Nyon (CH) August 2026

For The Strokes, I invited cellist Stellan Veloce to add music and composed noise as
further dimensions of touch to the “phantom massage”—a performative practice
that I developed for my solo project limb limb limb. In the phantom massage, I
recall my hand gestures and haptic memory from giving therapeutic touch to
massage clients. With precise focus, I reproduce the investigating and caring
gestures and project them towards the spectators’ bodies and towards the
architecture of the space. Eventually I concentrate the focus towards an imaginary
body that is taking shape between my hands. The imaginary body comes to act as
an ever-morphing proxy, intersecting performer and spectator.

The cello is here approached as a material proxy. With a shape resembling a human
torso, it is treated through touch by the player, releasing soundwaves that vibrate
the bodies of the audience in pleasurable and painful affect. In an intimate
dialogue, Stellan Veloce and I are co-creating a space filled with phantom touch:
long sliding strokes, intense pressure, and quick manipulations.

The Strokes embraces the dynamic qualities made possible through touch without
physical limits. It queers common gendered connotations with therapeutic touch,
conveying that "care" goes beyond the feminized properties that we usually ascribe
to it. Care is healing, creative, playful, rough, expressive, and highly transformative.
Even if they were not touched physically in a concrete way, the audience members
might leave the performance feeling as if they have had a treatment: with an
altered perception of their own bodies.

At the end of the performance, I recite a self-written text that interweaves actual
elements in the performance space with an imaginary care facility. This act creates
both an intimate connection with the shared room, and lets us imagine it
differently, as a space for collective sensory healing.
The Strokes is a commissioned work as part of the choreographic
format FEMALE GAZE - curation and concept by Carolin Brandl, Schinkel Pavillon,
Berlin. Funded by Hauptstadtkulturfonds.Premiered at Schinkel Pavillon Berlin 24.2.2024

		<description>SQUEEZE

SQUEEZE invites you to experience different dimensions of massage therapy. This ancient healing method is here lifted out of the treatment room and translated into a social choreography.&#38;nbsp;

Driven by haptic desire and curiosity in anatomy, five performers knead, press, shake and stretch body tissues, thick textiles, and in-between spaces. From these actions, sculptural constellations emerge and dissolve, imbued with pleasure-pain and tension-relief.&#38;nbsp;

Before entering, the audience members are given a “touch-consent sticker” that they  can take on and off at anytime if they want/don’t want to be touched by the performers.&#38;nbsp;&#38;nbsp;

Duration: 60 min + voluntary post-performance 15 min massage workshop.&#38;nbsp;Everyone is welcome to stay in the room, relax, chat, and practice massage after the performance.

“The chemistry and dynamics between the performers are ultimately what make this piece something to remember in the moment. They’re instant strangers but here you are responding with an empathetic chord to the countenance they display with each other, whether you expected to be touched or not.”

limb limb limb is a solo with many actors. A tactile soundscape which
carries memories of touch is projected through four surrounding speakers. There
is a shapeshifting performer, a grey figure. Are they a pile of rocks? A massage
therapist? Cyborg? Dancer? There is the audience, spread out in the space,
highly present in each other’s eyesight. Free to move and invited to rest.
There is the architecture and materiality of the space itself, that just like
the audience, is carefully investigated and treated by the performer. Between and
through these elements, especially between the performer’s hands, something
invisible yet highly tangible is approaching the senses. This fantasmical ever
changing being is gossiping that a body, or the constructs around it, are only
as solid as your fantasy allows it to be.

Concept, performance: Tyra Wigg
Premiered at Shedhalle Zürich June 4, 2022, in the high-intensity phase of the protozone “Zones of Kinship, Love &#38;amp; Playbour”curated by Lucie Tuma

Special thanks to Rafal Pierzynski and the DIVAS,
Miriam Coretta Schulte, Lucie Tuma, Katharina Germo, and many more, for your
reciprocity and input during this continuous process.

I collected this rock from the lake outside The Venue, to let it act as a medium, a steppingstone, between our bodies. I,
the caregiver, treat you, the receiver, by inviting you to place your
subjective corporeal perception inside the rock, and to absorb my caring hands and
words. Sometimes, the rock emerges as a subject in itself, finding its own
agency within the concrete space of The Venue. It calls for conversations with
the other artworks, and maybe also with your hands.

The hand, the rock, your shoulder, and my mouth, is the
development of a recycled extract from my choreographic piece Physical
Empathy, co-produced by Weld, Stockholm and ROXY Birsfelden 2021-22. The
rock is always a local performer, scouted in proximity to each venue that has
invited the practice. By building links between ourselves and this dense,
ancient object, we are also re-establishing our links with nature, as well as with
the time before and after us.

During
the difficulties of receiving massage clients during the pandemic I developed phone
massage, inspired by the body/fantasy stimulating practice of phone sex. phone
massage is a 1-on-1 interactive performance where I give an individually
designed body treatment over the phone. The receiver is asked in advance to be
in a calm surrounding where they can lay down comfortably without being
disturbed. For an optimal experience the receiver has a good phone/internet
reception and wears a headset with a pleasant sound quality.

The
session includes an interview during which I draw an image of the receiver’s
body from their subjective description, encouraged to use a non-judgmental
vocabulary. One is also encouraged to describe their body as something beyond the common notion of “human”. As as natural landscape,
volumes, shapes, a mythical creature...The body-drawing acts as a template on which I note the current
sensorial state and bodily needs and desires of the receiver.

The “treatment” is an
instant composition based on the interview. I use verbal descriptions of the massage, and (with
consent of the receiver) I apply analogue sound effects that might stimulate ASMR. The
immaterial aspect of this massage opens for unlimited experiences and
manipulations of the bodily perception via the imaginary.&#38;nbsp;
